- Although we could access it from multiple computers in the house at once, Soneta could play and stream only one CD at a time. A hard disk-based system can stream many different tracks to many different players simultaneously, limited only by processor power and disk speed.
- Soneta was doing a heck of a lot of encoding and decoding as it moved data from the CDs to the stereo. A hard disk-based system would incur significantly less processing.
- Soneta played only CDs. We had amassed a fair number of mp3 files, and we needed another application to play these.
Saying Goodbye
In late 2005, I requested a Slim Devices Squeezebox network music player from my lovely wife for Christmas, and then prepared myself mentally to retire Soneta. It wasn’t easy. I had spent a significant portion of my life putting it together. Fortunately, the Squeezebox works and sounds great, and I’ve even been able to do a little custom programming with it. All-in-all, I can say that I haven’t looked back. Except, of course, to throw this little history together!
Anyone want to buy a couple of good, used Sony 300-disc CD jukeboxes?
